Enjoy the trophy, then read the depth chart. His minutes are open only because Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are both hurt at his position. That is a real chance, not a coronation, and once those two are healthy the crowded veteran bench pushes him back down. He is not holding a starting role this season.
The Summer League MVP usually tells you nothing, a trophy for guys who never sniff a rotation. Yaxel Lendeborg is the exception, and it's the age that flips it. He's 23, not a teenage flier, the 11th pick who already won an NCAA title at Michigan and just became the first Warrior ever to take the award. That's a finished college player, ready now. He earns real rotation minutes for Golden State as a rookie.

Everyone reads Devon Witherspoon further along than Christian Gonzalez in the corner race. Look at the agent: both share one, and he is pacing Witherspoon first on purpose, upwards of $30m a year to reset a market Trent McDuffie just capped at $31m. Then he drops Gonzalez on top of that number, not under it. Going second is not falling behind, it is buying the higher floor. Gonzalez signs the richer deal.
Everyone frames the Baker Mayfield standoff as Tampa holding the cards with camp opening July 28. Read the calendar the other way. Mayfield, 31, is on the final year of a 3-year, $100m deal and wants close to $50m a year; the Bucs' only escape is the 2027 franchise tag, projected around $47m. That is not leverage, that is a bill. Stall and they pay $47m for one season or let ten-plus quarterbacks past $50m set his price. Mayfield gets paid, and Tampa blinks first.
Everyone's got Devon Witherspoon and Christian Gonzalez, the 2023 first-round corners who share an agent, cashing in together, both clearing Trent McDuffie's $31m top of the market. I'm not buying the together part. Witherspoon has 3 Pro Bowls and a 2025 All-Pro; Gonzalez has a torn labrum that cost 13 rookie games and a hamstring that cost 3 more last year. The teams already priced it: Seattle's 2027 option on Witherspoon is $21.1m, New England's on Gonzalez $18.1m. Witherspoon resets past $31m and Gonzalez signs for clearly less, durability discount and all.
An insider says he can't see the 49ers ever firing John Lynch or Kyle Shanahan, and I believe him. That's the whole problem. Together they've reached 3 NFC title games and 2 Super Bowls and won none of it. When nobody's job is ever on the line, you get comfortable, and comfortable teams find a way to lose the big one. The 49ers make another January run this year and hand the Lombardi to somebody else again.
