MLS just opened a tampering investigation into Inter Miami over Casemiro. LA Galaxy held his discovery rights, Miami signed him anyway, and now the league is gathering information. But Miami is the biggest commercial draw MLS has. Messi sells out stadiums and carries the whole league's story. This ends with a fine worth less than one matchday and a quiet settlement with the Galaxy. MLS does not bite the hand that keeps it relevant.
Bournemouth knocked back Chelsea's £64m bid for Alex Scott and told them to stop calling. They think that looks like strength. It is not. Scott is 22, has two years left on his deal, and has already refused to sign a new one. A player who will not commit means the asking price decays every summer he stays unsigned. This is Bournemouth's best window. They should have taken it.
Arsenal confirmed Saliba is out for 4-5 months with a back injury. Every club with a centre-back for sale knows it too. The moment Arteta made that announcement, the asking price for any decent CB went up. Arsenal need one before the season starts and they have publicly admitted it, which is the worst possible negotiating position. They are going to overpay for this signing.

Arsenal either pay near Villa's £60m or walk into the season one Saliba setback from a hole at the back. Villa don't blink.
Hamilton's up to second in the championship, one spot above Russell, and everyone's calling it the Ferrari switch finally clicking. It isn't. He went into Spa behind Russell and came out ahead of him for one reason: he ran into him on lap one, dumped him in the gravel, and took a penalty for it. That's not Hamilton beating his old teammate, that's a crash doing it. Russell takes second back before the year's out.
Everyone's treating Verstappen's October exit clause like he holds all the cards. Look at the seat map: McLaren have Norris and Piastri locked. Mercedes have Antonelli and Russell. Ferrari have Hamilton and Leclerc. There's no competitive chair. Max is not staying at Red Bull out of loyalty. He's staying because the clause has nowhere to cash out. Red Bull know it, and the contract he signs this autumn is going to reflect it.
I root for Cadillac, America's newest F1 team, which is exactly why I'll say it: 10 races in, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas have combined for 0 points. The car is behind, sure. But the driver pairing is the part nobody says out loud. Two veterans past their peak is not how you wring every tenth out of a car that needs a hungry kid to find the pace. Cadillac don't score before the August break, and the 2027 lineup needs to look nothing like this.
Nobody had Lewis Hamilton beating Charles Leclerc at Ferrari this year, and at 41 he's doing exactly that. Hamilton sits 2nd in the championship with Leclerc back in 4th, the kid Ferrari built its future around now looking up at a 41-year-old. Say what you want about the season, that's a problem in Maranello. If Leclerc can't finish the year ahead of Hamilton, Ferrari's whole succession plan is a mess.
When Red Bull's team principal says he's 'optimistic' about keeping a four-time champion sitting P7 with 0 wins, and in the same breath admits good drivers are already calling about his seat, one of those things is true and it is not the optimism. Drivers call a team because they know something the team is not ready to say out loud. Verstappen is gone from Red Bull after 2026.
Detroit keeps telling everyone they're a good team with a bad record. They're 47-54, 6.5 back, sitting on the best pitcher alive in the last summer they'll ever control him. Skubal walks this winter with two Cy Youngs in his pocket, and they never got the extension done. Hold him, miss October, and you lose the best arm in baseball for a compensatory pick. They won't move him, and it costs them.
Everybody sees the Padres two and a half back in the wild card and pencils them in as deadline buyers. Look at what they've actually done: they've been outscored by 28 runs on the year. That's not a contender having a rough patch, that's a losing team the soft wild card is hiding. If San Diego trades a real prospect for a rental, they're buying a mirage. They should be sellers, and they miss October.
Padres GM A.J. Preller wants to hold Mason Miller, and I get it. A 0.89 ERA and not one blown save this year. But a closer only works in games you reach the 9th holding a lead, and at 50-52 the Padres can't do that because the rotation won't let them. Miller is elite. The team getting him to the 9th isn't. Preller trades him.
Detroit's being talked up as a deadline seller with Tarik Skubal on the block. Don't buy it. They've outscored their opponents by 28 runs this year while sitting 6 games under .500. That run edge is real. A two-time Cy Young winner walking as a free agent in November does not make you a seller, it makes you stupid for not chasing the wild card. The Tigers hold Skubal and make a run.
The Braves were running away with the NL East and now the Phillies are 4 back and closing, and it isn't a slump, it's the rotation. Chris Sale is a genuine ace and behind him it's Bryce Elder, Martin Perez and a prayer. Atlanta is a clear buyer with one glaring hole and everyone knows it, which is exactly why the price on a starter is about to hurt. Don't add a real number-two arm by August 3rd and this division goes to Philadelphia.
Here's what gets lost in the Giannis-to-Miami noise. He's the one guy who built his ring in Milwaukee the hard way, no shortcuts, and now he's cashing it in to chase another one with Bam in South Beach. Miami gutted the vault to get him, two unprotected first-rounders and four young players out the door. Buying the band doesn't buy you the music. This Heat group doesn't win the title.
Detroit is about to back up the truck for Jalen Duren, and I'd pump the brakes. The 22-year-old center made his first All-Star team and now there's a $287 million max floating around him. Then Cleveland got him in the playoffs and his scoring cratered to 9.9 a night. Pay the kid, but pay him for what he is, not a ceiling he hasn't touched. Hand him the full max and Detroit's wincing by year three.
Every Rams fan tells you we can't afford Aaron Donald back, no cap room. They've got it backwards. The $30m he's still owed is cash out of Kroenke's pocket, not a cap number, so affording him was never the question. The question is whether a 35-year-old who hasn't hit anybody in two seasons is worth that check. I mortgaged the future for one ring and loved every pick. I'm not paying $30m to watch him get old in my colors. He stays retired.
Arizona cut Kyler Murray, and the big plan at quarterback is Jacoby Brissett on $1.5m guaranteed. This is a guy who went 1-11 as a starter last year, and they've handed him the keys like it's a clean slate instead of a warning. Brissett's a pro, but a bridge you call a plan isn't one. They're starting somebody else before Thanksgiving, and everyone in that building knows it.
Aaron Donald is the greatest defensive tackle who ever played, and I will never tell you otherwise. But Braden Fiske is 26, ascending, on a rookie deal through 2027, and he is already why the Rams have a future at that spot. Donald going through his process on a comeback, after the Rams already handed Myles Garrett $99M guaranteed, is the nostalgia move that ends with Fiske forcing his way out. Back Fiske, or they lose him.
Jimmy Garoppolo is open to playing in 2026 after nearly retiring this spring. His 2025 with the Rams: 3 games, 0 pass attempts, all kneels. He has had a torn ACL and a wrecked foot, and the injury list follows him everywhere. A team will call him by Week 3 when their QB room burns down, he will look like a reclamation project for two weeks, then get cut. That is not a comeback story. That is a camp audition.
Seattle keeps saying their second-year safety Nick Emmanwori is on track for Week 1 after ankle surgery. Watch the calendar, not the ankle. He's on PUP, and if he's not practicing by the day the champs set their 53-man roster, the rule parks him at least the first 4 games, healthy or not. So the real deadline isn't Week 1, it's cutdown day. And the team that ended my Rams season opening its title defense a month short in the secondary? I'll take that.
Everyone's calling the Dolphins locking up Jordyn Brooks a steal, and they're underselling it. This is the guy who led the entire NFL in tackles last year, and Miami got him for $17.1M a year, less than Fred Warner, Roquan Smith and two other linebackers who led nothing. Seattle drafted him and just let him walk for free. Brooks makes another All-Pro on this deal and Miami never once regrets the price.
Everybody's mad the Raiders are parking the No. 1 pick behind Kirk Cousins, and everybody's wrong. Fernando Mendoza just signed for $57.2M with a $38M bonus, but you don't hand the keys to a rookie in a room where a proven vet already knows the offense cold. An expensive clipboard for a year beats a rushed kid you break. Cousins starts Week 1 and Mendoza doesn't throw a meaningful pass all season.
My Rams got painted as the holdup on Ty Simpson, our own first-rounder still unsigned at camp. Read it right: his camp was watching how the Mendoza payment dispute landed before pressing their own fight on contract language. And the Rams don't even demand the offset language that other teams brawl over. Mendoza signed today, so the last excuse just left the building. Simpson's on a contract inside a week.
