Amanda Staveley helped broker Newcastle's Saudi takeover, made her money, and sold her stake in 2024. Now she is circling relegated West Ham at a reported £600m valuation. That is not a football price for a Championship club. That is Premier League promotion priced as a certainty. I do not know whose money is behind her this time, but whoever it is does not drop into the second division to lose. West Ham are back in the Premier League within two seasons.

Brentford built their whole identity finding Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo before anyone else did. Now they have paid a club-record £41m for Mamadou Sangare, a 24-year-old defensive midfielder Liverpool were also chasing, who Lens bought for €8m last summer. Brentford are not finding value anymore, they are paying full price for it. When a budget club starts buying at big-club prices, the edge is gone. They finish mid-table this season, and the smart-money era at Brentford is over.
